ARM Chips

Produced by the ARM Ltd., based out of the UK, ARM chips are RISC-based microprocessors widely used in smartphones, e-book readers, game consoles, and a wide array of other consumer electronics where having a small chip with low power needs and passive cooling capabilities is a necessity.

 

HTML

HyperText Markup Language is the text language that defines all of the content on every web page that you visit, and is even used in most email clients to display the text you’re reading right now.

 

PvE

PvE (short for Player Versus Environment, a.k.a. [PvM] Player Versus Monster) refers to video games where players compete/fight against computer-controlled challenges and/or enemies.

 

Plaintext

Plain text is a term used in cryptography and computer security to refer to the text which is transferred without encryption. Un-encrypted emails, for example, are sent entirely as plain text when transferred between email hosts, as are instant messages and a wide variety of communications. Even encrypted communication channels typically use plain text during the very initial negotiation before switching to an entirely encrypted exchange.

 

HTTP 401/403 Errors

401 Unauthorized and 403 Forbidden are two closely related HTTP status codes related to the server’s inability to give you the data you are requesting. When the web site you are visiting gives you a 401 error, it means that you have no properly authenticated yourself with the server’s security system in order to gain authorized access to the web page or data you wish to view. A 403 Forbidden error, by contrast, indicates that (authorized or not) you still do not have the proper access level for the material you wish to view.

 

Wi-Fi Squatter

A Wi-Fi Squatter is an individual who seeks out ‘open and unsecured’ or public Wi-Fi networks to use with or without permission, all with the goal of hooking into a wireless connection without cost to themselves.

 

Network Meltdown

A Network Meltdown occurs when a network is barely able to function or completely grinds to a halt due to excessive traffic. Network Meltdowns can be caused by an overload of legitimate traffic, erroneous conditions, malicious activity, or a lack of infrastructure able to accommodate such a high volume of traffic.

XGA (short for Extended Graphics Array) is a display specification with a resolution of 1024*768 pixels introduced by IBM in 1990.

 

Telepathology

Tele-pathology is the practice of pathology (a medical diagnosis) via telecommunications technology from a remote (off-site) location.

 

Cliff Effect

Cliff Effect (a.k.a. Brick Wall Effect) refers to the sudden loss of an audio or video digital transmission signal. Unlike analog transmission signals which can fade in and out, digital transmission signals are an all-or-nothing deal…either there is enough signal strength to maintain the minimum signal threshold or there is not.

 

Crypto-Anarchism

Crypto-Anarchism is a cyber ideology that embraces the use of cryptography for the purposes of maintaining freedom, evading prosecution/harassment, protecting privacy, preventing government control/regulation of the Internet, etc.

 

Giant

A Giant is an oversized packet that is too large for transmission over a network.
